Context Is Everything

If we have an experienced teacher or have reliable study aides, learning what God’s word is saying to us becomes relatively easy.

Of course, the most reliable teacher we could ever have is God Himself.

There are many passages and verses in His word that are easily taken out of context and are mistakenly pointing those who are not aware in the wrong direction. This can lead to even more confusion and perhaps the loss of salvation.

It is very important to understand the context of what is being conveyed in a passage or verse, and to do this we must:

  1. Go to God in prayer before opening the Word.

  2. Compare scripture with scripture.

  3. Understand the root meaning of a word if a passage is difficult to understand.

  4. Read the entire passage, not just one verse. Read the passages before and after the verse in question. This will help to bring it into the correct context.

  5. Use reliable study guides that are based on the Bible, not the teachings of Joe so-and-so on social media.

Allow the Holy Bible to interpret itself. It is a supernatural book unlike any other. It is through HIs word that God speaks to us.

  • Observe. What does the text say? Ask these questions: Who, what, where, when, why, and how. You will begin to get the whole picture.

  • What does the text mean? Remember, context is everything. We cannot pull one isolated verse and decide.

  • History & Culture: Who was the author, audience, and historical background?

  • Scripture interprets Scripture! Compare cross-references to be sure your interpretation does not contradict other parts of the Bible.

Having a good study Bible helps. The Andrews Study Bible is an excellent choice. I received a copy of this Bible when I was baptized.

Join a study group or study with a friend. My church studies the Word each Sabbath before our worship service. We learn so much more when we learn together.

We often discuss what-ifs, and that leads us to dig deeper into God’s Word.
